Chicago street renamed for Blues legend

Blues great Buddy Guy received a belated birthday present from the city of Chicago earlier this month that nearly brought him to tears.

Just one week after the legend celebrated his 75th birthday, the city renamed the street in from of Guy’s club, Legends, “Buddy Guy Way.”

The ceremony included Chicago Alderman Bob Fioretti read a proclamation from Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Afterward, the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” as Guy received a copy of the street sign.

Though Guy was born in Louisiana in 1936, he moved to Chicago when he was 21 to pursue his musical career. He eventually began backing other blues greats like Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson before branching out as a solo artist.

After more than five decades in the music industry, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer continues to perform live and currently has steady gigs through the end of the year. Upcoming Buddy Guy tickets are available for Aug. 27 at the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, N.Y. with B.B. King and J Geils; Sept. 3 at the Moody Theater in Austin; and Sept. 23 at The Grove in Anaheim.
